In 1974, the young and callow Englishman George Armitage goes to Madras in the hopes of returning with at least the beginning of his Ph.D. dissertation. Instead, he comes home with a bride named Viji, an Indian woman he barely knows. This seemingly unlikely pair eventually wind up in Sacramento, where they buy a ranch house and give birth to triplets.
In this new American world of shag carpets and pudding pops, Viji seeks consolation in her prayer room, which she visits frequently to gossip, sass, and seek advice from the framed portraits of her dead relatives. It is here where Viji feels most herself, where she immerses herself in the comforts of home, and where these deceased family members “felt as real to her as she’d been to them.”
The relative calm of Viji’s California existence is interrupted when George’s father shows up on their doorstep, unexpected and unannounced. Granddad Stan encourages the triplets to pee in the rosebushes, beds the neighbor’s maid, and takes every opportunity to flummox Viji in every way he can. So when Viji’s sister sends an out-of-the-blue invitation to visit India, she prepares for her first trip home in nearly eleven years, not knowing for sure if she’ll ever return to the States.
A hilarious and heartfelt debut, The Prayer Room re-examines the meaning of family—the people who live down the hall, the people who exist only in our memories, and the people who roll their eyes at you from within their picture frames.

It is a story of two people who end up together more out of a lack of conscious decision-making than by intent. With the arrival of triplets, they manage to carry on and create a family, but neither seems to derive much joy from their existence. Viji is lonely and George is isolated. The surprise arrival of George's crusty British widower father seems to be the straw that breaks the camel's back, and sets off a chain of events where both George and Viji examine their lives. One reviewer indicated they had hoped for more of a reconciliation between George and Viji, but I think the resolution worked well for the book. Sometimes we get the life that we just settle for. I enjoyed reading it and look forward to reading more from this author.

The Prayer Room edition by Shanthi Sekaran Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
It started off being interesting and ended up being a chore to finish. The story didn't flow well. Sometimes jumping from the present to the past was a little frustrating. I wouldn't recommend this book.
This is a fantastically written tale that captures beautifully the fact that there is always two sides to every story. It provides a fascinating and challanging insight into love, relationships, cultures and family and reminds the reader that in life, there are very rarely clear cut heros or villains - just people.
Enjoyed the book.
Did finish this book but did not really enjoy it. The people were not real to me and the circumstances too seemed very contrived.
A great and fast read.
I kept getting lost in the storyline as it jumped from one time period to another. It occurred to me several pages in that there was little to no dialogue between the characters and I was concerned that the entire story would be like that and as a consequence, the story would continue to lag. It started to pick up once the triplets entered the storyline, but I never felt like I connected with either of the main characters. If the author was trying to create characters who were as much an enigma to the reader as they were to each other, then she succeeded wildly. Unfortunately, due to what I hope was my own ignorance, I didn't quite understand what Viji or George were really about.
To be honest, the only reason I finished the book was because I had gotten a quarter of the way through it and wanted to at least get my money's worth. I really wanted to like it but I didn't, not really.
I read "Lucky Boy" before I read this one and found both very absorbing. Some pages will make you laugh. Some will make you cry. But most outstanding to me is her free-ranging, creative writing itself and the way it keeps you right inside the story.
